Staff Profile: Kevin Janisch

Meet Kevin Janisch

Kevin works in White House of Music's purchasing department and teaches cello at our Waukesha store.

Kevin Janisch1. What instrument(s) do you play?

Cello (primarily) and electric/upright bass

2. How long have you been playing?

24 years

3. Why is your instrument (violin/viola/cello/bass) awesome?

The cello is a versatile instrument that fits into several genres, is a wonderful solo instrument, and along with the bass, provides the foundation of the orchestra.

4. What is your favorite piece that you’ve ever played and why?

My favorite solo piece(s) are the Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello by J.S. Bach. The suites demonstrate Bach’s creative genius and I feel like I learn something new every time I play/hear them. I also enjoy playing Baroque and Classical chamber music as well as the symphonic works of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Dvorak.

5. Are you in any performing groups right now?

I currently play with the UW-Parkside Community Orchestra and also serve on the music team at my church.

6. What advice would you give to young string players?

Take lessons and learn to practice intentionally.  Practice with a metronome and tuner. Attend concerts to see the professionals in action. Most important of all, get the instrument in your hands every day – even if it’s just to play a few scales.

7. What is your favorite string instrument or orchestral accessory at White House of Music?

Every musician should have a good metronome/tuner – I recommend the Korg TM-50.
